As a Dietitian, I often see people mistake blood sugar crashes for simply being “really hungry.” In reality, blood sugar fluctuations can affect energy, mood, focus, and how you feel throughout the day. Common signs may include shakiness, anxiety, irritability, fatigue, headaches, brain fog, dizziness, sweating, sugar cravings, or a racing heartbeat.
Blood sugar crashes can happen for many reasons, including skipping meals, eating mostly carbohydrates without enough protein, drinking coffee without food, long gaps between meals, poor sleep, stress, under-eating during the day, insulin resistance, diabetes, or certain medications.
One of the best ways to support steadier blood sugar is eating consistently throughout the day.
Try aiming for meals or snacks every 3-4 hours and include protein, fiber, and healthy fats to help slow digestion and provide longer-lasting energy.
Easy balanced snack ideas include:
- Apple + peanut butter
- Greek yogurt + berries
- Cheese + crackers
- Protein shake + fruit
- Trail mix
Using the MyPlate method can also help support more stable blood sugar and energy levels:
½ plate fruits and non-starchy vegetables
¼ plate protein
¼ plate carbohydrates
Remember: your body may need more support, consistency, and nourishment — not more willpower.
